The Hinoki Journal

The back is the part that matters.

It curves around you rather than sitting flat, wrapping at the shoulder blades so the chair holds you through a long dinner instead of asking you to sit up straight. The upholstery is a soft breathable fabric over high-density foam, pale enough to read as cream in daylight, and it's set on a solid wood frame with tapered legs and a reinforced base. Mid-century in line, but not a reproduction of anything — it's simple enough to sit with a marble table or a plain oak one without arguing.

Why It Found Its Way to Hinoki

Dining chairs are usually either comfortable or good-looking. This one manages both, and it's light enough to move around a room without a second person.

✦ Amy's Styling Tip

An 18" seat height works with standard dining tables of 28–30", which covers almost everything — measure yours before ordering if it's a custom or vintage table. Two of these at the ends of a bench-seated table is my favorite way to use them.

Hinoki Care Suggestions

Vacuum the upholstery regularly and blot spills rather than rubbing. Wipe the wood with a dry cloth and keep it out of direct sun so the tone stays even.
