A swan cast in solid brass with its wings swept up and back until the tips nearly meet the curve of its neck — the negative space between them makes a near-perfect ring, which is the clever part of the design and the reason it reads as sculpture rather than a novelty. The feathers are worked in detail across the wings and body, and the brass has taken on the warm uneven patina that only comes from age. At six and a half inches tall it's a small piece, the kind that works best where someone will come close enough to notice it.

Brass animals turn up constantly and most of them are dull. This one has real movement in it — you can see the moment it's trying to catch. A single piece, found rather than ordered.

At this size it wants company — grouped with two or three other small vintage pieces it makes a proper gallery wall, and the shapes matter more than the sizes matching. Alone, put it somewhere narrow that catches afternoon light: the wall beside a doorway, or above a light switch.

Dust with a soft dry cloth. Don't polish it unless you want the patina gone — the warm uneven tone is decades in the making and won't come back.
