The Hinoki Journal

Caught mid-yowl, and delighted about it.

The image comes straight out of old Halloween ephemera — a black cat with its ears flat, whiskers flying, mouth open in a red-orange howl, eyes gone wide and gold. It's printed with the edges left rough, so it reads like a paper cutout pasted onto the mustard ground rather than something machine-perfect. At eight inches it's small, which is the right scale for this: enough to make someone smile from across the room, not enough to take the room over.

Why It Found Its Way to Hinoki

Seasonal decor usually means orange plastic and glitter. This is a genuine vintage graphic, sewn by hand in Phoenix, in a yellow warm enough that it doesn't look out of place in October or November.

Eight inches is a punctuation mark, not a pillow — I'd sit it at the front of a stack, on a hall bench, or propped in a chair nobody uses. The mustard plays well against dark green and warm brown, so it can stay out past Halloween.
