The Hinoki Journal

A coat that isn't one.

It falls almost to the ankle, which is the whole idea — open at the front with no closures, so it moves as you walk and layers over anything without fighting it. The pattern is a proper Fair Isle worked in bands of burgundy, rust, cream and deep brown, dense enough to carry the length without going flat. Patch pockets at the hip, ribbed cuffs, and a wool-blend yarn with enough recycled polyester and nylon in it to keep the weight manageable over a garment this size.

Why It Found Its Way to Hinoki

Long cardigans usually sag or itch or both. This one holds its line, the colorwork is genuinely well drawn, and it does the job of a coat indoors — which is most of autumn, really.

Hinoki Fit Notes

This cardigan is cut long and relaxed and runs true to size. It's designed to fall near the ankle — if you're under about 5'4", expect it to graze the floor.

Keep everything underneath narrow and plain — a cream tank and a straight brown trouser is all it needs. Adding pattern under this can create more depth and dimension!

Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. Reshape while damp, and support the weight when wet so the length doesn't stretch.
